Jordi Vilanova i Bosch: Master of Modern Spanish Design

Jordi Vilanova i Bosch (Barcelona, 1925-1998) was a renowned cabinetmaker, interior designer, and industrial designer from Catalonia, regarded as one of the key figures in the renewal of modern Spanish design during the mid-20th century. His work is distinguished by the influence of Scandinavian design, the balance of functionality and understated elegance, and a deep respect for craftsmanship and local tradition.

Career and Philosophy

Trained at the Escola del Treball and La Llotja, Vilanova began his career in the 1950s, working on interior design, furniture, and lighting. He was a co-founder of the multidisciplinary group La Cantonada, which brought together design, ceramics, sculpture, and painting. His design philosophy focused on creating practical, durable, and adaptable pieces, suited to the modern home, while preserving the warmth of materials such as wood, iron, glass, and ceramics.

Iconic Works

Anella Floor Lamp (1967): An elegant design in wrought iron with a fabric shade, considered a classic of 1960s Catalan design.

Delta Stool (1964): Awarded the ADI-FAD Delta de Plata, this piece became one of his most iconic creations in children’s furniture.

Tiracord and Billar Chairs: Designs that exemplify his ability to merge innovation, simplicity, and craftsmanship.

Modular and Children’s Furniture: Modern, practical solutions that reflected his forward-thinking approach.

Legacy and Influence

Vilanova’s legacy extends beyond his objects. His Barcelona-based studio and shop, active for decades until 2005, became a reference point for contemporary interior and furniture design. Today, his pieces are highly sought after in the vintage design market, valued both by collectors and lovers of Mediterranean modernism.

His body of work reflects the transition from craft-based design to modern industrial production, securing his place as a true reference in Catalan industrial design.
