Álvaro Siza Vieira, born in Matosinhos, Portugal, in 1933, is one of the most influential Portuguese architects and designers of the 20th century. His work combines modernism with Portuguese architectural traditions and is distinguished by its formal clarity, constructive precision and sensitivity to landscape and materials.His best-known projects include the Boa Nova Tea House, the Leça Swimming Pools, the Faculty of Architecture in Porto and the Portugal Pavilion for Expo 98. Siza also applied his architectural language to furniture and lighting design, creating functional, minimalist and elegantly understated objects.His notable lighting designs include the Fil lamp for Mobles 114, created in 1991, and the Falena lamp for FontanaArte, designed in 1994. Winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1992, Álvaro Siza Vieira remains a key figure in contemporary Portuguese architecture and design.
