Étienne Fermigier: French Furniture and Lighting DesignerÉtienne Fermigier (1932–1973) was an influential 20th-century French designer known for his furniture, lighting and industrial design. He studied at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris before establishing his own design studio in 1957.In 1959, Fermigier co-founded the Meubles et Fonction gallery with Pierre Perrigault, helping promote modern French design. Throughout his career, he collaborated with manufacturers including Disderot, Airborne, Steiner, Sentou, Roset and Mirima. In 1967, he received the prestigious Prix René Gabriel for his contribution to mass-produced furniture design.Étienne Fermigier’s designs combine functionality, innovation and the distinctive industrial aesthetic of 1960s and 1970s French design. Among his most recognisable works is the telescopic Tractor stool for Mirima, an adjustable ergonomic seat inspired by agricultural machinery.Today, vintage Étienne Fermigier furniture and lighting are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of 20th-century European design.
